OSLO, Norway -- Rosenborg coach Age Hareide has been confirmed as Norway's new coach, with the task of rebuilding them after their failure to qualify for Euro 2004.
Hareide, 50, will take charge from January 1 after Nils Johan Semb quit last month when Spain beat Norway in their Euro 2004 playoff.
The Norwegian FA have agreed to pay Rosenborg an undisclosed sum to free Hareide from his contract, which had two years still to run.
Hareide joined Rosenborg a year ago and steered them to a 12th consecutive league title in 2003. Rosenborg also won the Cup.
Rosenborg beat Red Star Belgrade last week to reach the third round of the UEFA Cup, but they failed to make the Champions League this year, ending a run of eight consecutive appearances.
Hareide has also coached at Denmark's Brondby, Helsingborg of Sweden and Norway's Molde.
Semb steered Norway to Euro 2000 but they have since slid down FIFA's rankings to 39th, from a brief spell in second place in the mid-1990s behind Brazil.
Hareide's assistant at Rosenborg, Ola By Riise, is likely to take over his old job.
