Petit sidelined after knee surgery
PARIS, France (Reuters) -- Chelsea midfielder Emmanuel Petit will undergo knee surgery in Strasbourg on Thursday and will be sidelined for six weeks, he told sports daily l'Equipe.
The former French international, plagued by injuries in recent months, has only played five games this season for the London club.
"These days, my knee is completely stiff," said the 33-year-old Petit, who was injured in a league game against Aston Villa a month ago.
Petit said he had taken tablets for two weeks to help cure his swollen right knee, but to no effect.
As a result, he will be operated on in Strasbourg by professor Jean-Henri Jaeger, who also took care of Petit when he received surgery for groin problems during the close season.
"If all goes well, I think I'll need four weeks to recover and some six weeks to make it back on the pitch," Petit said.
