Lens focus to take revenge victory
PARIS, France -- Racing Lens ousted French champions Olympique Lyon from the League Cup 4-3 on penalties in the first round on Tuesday. Lyon had beaten Lens on the last day of the season to clinch the league title in 2002 and humbled the northern team 4-0 in a Ligue 1 game this term. They came very close to making it three in a row when in-form striker Peguy Luyindula broke the deadlock 10 minutes into extra time. But Polish defender Jacek Bak levelled for Lens seven minutes later, forcing the exciting tie into a penalty shootout. Luyindula went from joy to despair as he missed his spot kick. Nantes fought back from a goal down against Ligue 2 side Nancy to take the game into extra time and then scored twice to secure a 3-1 win. The only upset ahead of Wednesday's six remaining first round matches came in Montpellier where the Ligue 1 team lost 1-0 to second division Clermont Foot.
