AC Milan and Juve open gap at top
ROME, Italy -- New leaders AC Milan and champions Juventus opened out a four-point buffer at the top of Serie A on Sunday with comfortable 3-0 and 2-0 wins over Sampdoria and Brescia respectively. Juve keeper Gianluigi Buffon had to save an early Roberto Baggio penalty to keep his side level but midfielder Pavel Nedved and striker David Trezeguet scored for Juve before halftime in Turin. Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko's seventh goal in as many games wrapped up a comfortable away win for Milan. Danish strike partner Jon Dahl Tomasson had given them the lead at newly promoted Sampdoria just before halftime. Both Juve and AC Milan have 19 points and their cause was helped when third-placed AS Roma drew 0-0 with Inter Milan in the San Siro in the Sunday evening match. Elsewhere a late strike by Italy striker Bernardo Corradi allowed Lazio to put their midweek Champions League defeat by Chelsea behind them with a 2-1 win over Bologna. Parma reclaimed fourth place on 14 points with a 3-0 win against Modena, while Udinese striker Dino Fava Passaro hit a hat-trick in his side's 3-3 draw with Perugia. Bottom-placed Ancona remain without a win after their goalless draw against Reggina.
