Strupar back with home town team
ZAGREB, Croatia (Reuters) -- Former Belgium striker Branko Strupar has signed a two-year contract with Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb, the club said on Thursday.
"I am very happy to join the team I supported from my early childhood. The only weird thing is my way to Dinamo, from a club based in a Zagreb suburb via Belgium and England," the Croatia-born Strupar said.
The 34-year-old started his career at a low-level club in Zagreb.
Having then no prospect of moving to Dinamo, he left for the Belgian second division in 1994.
During his nine-year international career Strupar played for Genk and England's Derby County. In 1999 he obtained Belgian citizenship and a call-up to the Belgian national side.
The peak of his international career was the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan, where Belgium reached the second round before losing to Brazil.
A knee injury ended his stint at Derby.
