England fix up friendly with Danes

Story Tools

LONDON, England -- England have arranged a friendly game against fellow Euro 2004 qualifiers Denmark at Old Trafford on November 16.

The Danes should provide testing opposition, having secured their qualification for Portugal by holding off Norway and Romania to top group two in the qualifying competition.

England booked their place by drawing 0-0 against Turkey in Istanbul.

The two sides last met in the second round of the World Cup last year, when England won 3-0. Denmark have only beaten England once in 15 attempts -- a 1-0 win at Wembley in a European qualifier in 1983.

England's Swedish coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said he was looking forward to the clash with his fellow Scandinavians.

"Denmark are a passionate football nation with a proud tradition," he said. "They won the European Championship in 1992 and their qualification for Euro 2004 shows that their current team is very strong.

"The match will be a very good chance to prepare the squad for next year's championship and test ourselves against high-level opposition."

Denmark have arranged friendlies against Turkey and Spain for February and March of next year as well as the England game.

Coach Morten Olsen said: "We will be facing one of the leading football nations. When you look at our schedule of friendly matches you have to conclude that we will be meeting some of the best teams in the world."
