Brazilian Barcellos ends his reign

GLASGOW, Scotland -- Marcio Maximo Barcellos, the first Brazilian to take charge of a British team, has quit as manager of Scottish Premier League side Livingston after four months in the job.

Barcellos, who helped launch the careers of World Cup winners Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos and Ronaldinho when he was coach of his country's youth side in the early 1990s, cited personal reasons for his resignation.

His decision stunned Livingston captain Stuart Lovell and the rest of the players.

Lovell was ordered to gather his team-mates together for a lunch-time meeting attended by the manager and chairman Dominic Keane to hear the decision.

"Normally with these things you get a slight idea that something's going to happen but not with this one," said the Australian international.

Barcellos's move came shortly after South American media reported that former Brazilian World Cup star Junior had resigned as coach of Corinthians after only seven days in charge.

The ex-defender, who made a name for himself as a TV pundit after finishing his career, took over the reigning FIFA world club champions at the start of the month.

But Junior decided he had had enough after two 3-0 defeats.

"In seven days as a coach, I had four sleepless nights. I also lost weight. I think I just underestimated the problems involved with coaching," said Junior whose only other coaching position was in the early 1990's with his old club, Flamengo.

Barcellos' departure was shrounded in mystery and Lovell added: "I would have liked to have had more of an explanation and I felt the lads deserved it, but the chairman said he couldn't give us that.....

"....while the players owe it to Marcio to give him his privacy, there's a lot of the lads who are genuinely sad to see him go."

Chairman Keane lured Barcellos from his job as technical director of the Cayman Islands to sign a one-year contract during the close season.

Former Celtic manager David Hay, Livingston's general manager, is likely to take control of the team alongside assistant Allan Preston at Hibernian on Saturday.
