Oliviera resigns as Flamengo coach

RIO DE JANIERO, Brazil -- Oswaldo Oliveira has resigned as coach of Flamengo to become the 38th coaching victim since the Brazilian championship started in March.

Oliveira, who had been in the hot seat since July, is also the third coach this year to leave Flamengo.

He walked out after his team beat arch-rivals Vasco da Gama 2-1 in a derby match on Sunday.

Oliveira, who began the championship in charge of Sao Paulo before being fired in May, blamed his decision on club politics.

He added that he and his staff were not being paid on time and that the club's infrastructure was run down.

"The situation was getting out of control. The club's political situation was interfering directly in our work," said Oliveira.

Despite Sunday's win, Flamengo appear to be heading for a mediocre mid-table finish and have only a remote chance of qualifying for next year's South American Libertadores Cup.

Flamengo began the year under veteran coach Evaristo Macedo, who was fired after a poor performance in the season-opening Carioca championship and was replaced by Nelsinho Baptista for the Brazilian championship.

Cruzeiro, Ponte Preta, Internacional, Santos and Coritiba are the only clubs who have kept the same coach since the start of the tournament.
