MANCHESTER, England -- Manchester United have confirmed chief executive Peter Kenyon's departure to Chelsea and named managing director David Gill as replacement.

The English Premier League champions announced the changes to the London Stock Exchange on Tuesday.

"We would like to thank Peter for his significant contribution to the success of Manchester United on and off the pitch in the last six years," Manchester United PLC chairman Roy Gardner said.

"David has also played a major role in that success, and we are delighted that his appointment will bring both experience and continuity to this position."

Chelsea also confirmed Kenyon's appointment on Tuesday.

"Chelsea Village plc, the parent company of Chelsea Football Club, confirms that it has agreed to employ Peter Kenyon as chief executive officer," a statement on the club's official Web site said.

"Mr Kenyon's employment is set to commence as permitted by contractual arrangements with his current employer."

Boardroom coup

The appointment of Kenyon represents a real boardroom coup for big-spending Chelsea's new Russian billionaire owner Roman Abramovich, who has already splashed out more than $150 million on players.

In a statement issued by his solicitors on Monday, Kenyon said he had "enjoyed his time at Manchester United enormously."

"However, the new opportunity that has arisen at Chelsea represents a challenge that Mr Kenyon feels is right to take at this stage of his career," the statement added.

Kenyon took over as United chief executive from Martin Edwards in August 2000 after joining the club in 1997 from sportswear manufacturer Umbro International.

Gill, 46, joined United in 1997 from First Choice Holidays and was promoted to Managing Director in 2001.

"I've worked with Alex (Ferguson) for six-and-a-half years on all the big deals and I believe, and fervently hope, that I can develop the same close relationship with him that Peter had," Gill told MUTV.
