Parker handed top French accolade
PARIS, France -- San Antonio Spurs player Tony Parker has been voted French sportsman of 2003 by sports daily l'Equipe, becoming the first basketball player to win the award.
The 21-year-old finished ahead of France's women's handball team, who won the world title in Croatia a week ago, and athlete Eunice Barber, crowned long jump world champion in Paris in August.
"Since 1946 when l'Equipe named its first French champion of the year, no basketball player has won," l'Equipe said.
"Tony Parker is the first as he always was. Because on June 15 he became the first Frenchman to become NBA champion with the San Antonio Spurs. That day, he walked on the moon."
