MELBOURNE, Australia -- Peter Senior fired a seven-under-par 65 to open a five-shot lead after the second round of the Australian PGA golf championship at Coolum on the Sunshine Coast.

The 44-year-old Australian had shared the first round lead with Steve Collins after both recorded 64s, but he moved clear of the field with another eight birdies and one bogey.

Rod Pampling's 69 placed him second at 10-under 134 while Collins slipped back to a share of seventh with a 73.

"I was really happy with the way I got going and I thought I could birdie every hole," said Senior, who has cut back his tournament schedule to spend more time with his family.

"I'm hitting the short stuff so good now. If I could have done it ages ago I could have won another dozen tournaments."

Frenchman Jan Van de Velde, making his comeback from a serious knee injury, carded his second straight 69 to trail Senior by nine strokes in a share of 10th place.

Greg Norman, who has tennis star Lleyton Hewitt as his caddie, had an inconsistent day with two double bogeys, two bogeys and four birdies in a two-over 74 that left him 12 shots off the lead.
