Paerson completes a quick double
PARK CITY, U.S. -- Sweden's Anja Paerson claimed an emphatic victory in a World Cup slalom race in Park City on Saturday, 24 hours after winning a giant slalom on the same hill.
The 22-year-old took a 0.86-second advantage into the second leg and increased that gap to more than a second to win in one minute 33.74.
Defending world downhill champion Michael Walchhofer of Austria won a men's World Cup downhill race in Lake Louise in one minute, 51.16 seconds.
Paerson's victory was her ninth in World Cup slaloms and underlined her current dominance of the sport.
Experienced Swiss Sonja Nef claimed second place with a time of 1:34.88, while world slalom silver medallist Marlies Schild made sure there was an Austrian on the podium.
Walchhofer finished ahead of Erik Guay of Canada, who took silver in 1:51.85. Guay, who was sixth at the world championships last year, became the first Canadian to reach the podium at Lake Louise.
Antoine Deneriaz of France was third in 1:51.90.
Austrian favorite Stephan Eberharter, the reigning overall World Cup champion, was well off the pace at 1:52.81 while American Bode Miller, who was runner-up for the overall crown last season, was also way behind in 1:53.03.
