MELBOURNE, Australia -- Jelena Dokic is to play at the Australian Open in January, her first appearance since an acrimonious first round exit from the tournament three years ago.
The 20-year-old has refused to play in Australia since losing to Lindsay Davenport in the opening round in 2001.
Her father, Damir, claimed the draw had been rigged against his daughter and Dokic -- who represented Australia at the Sydney Olympics and in the Fed Cup -- returned to her native Serbia.
Dokic will also play at the Sydney International event from January 11-17, her first appearance in Australia since quitting the country.
"Over the last year Jelena has expressed a great desire both publicly and privately to play the Australian circuit again and we are delighted that she has chosen the Sydney International to be her first tournament," said tournament director Craig Watson.
"Jelena's aggressive and exciting style of play has always been popular with Australian tennis fans. She is once again showing the signs that took her to a career-high ranking of fourth in the world."
Dokic finished the season at 15th in the WTA world rankings.
