MIAMI -- Justine Henin-Hardenne finished the season as the world's top ranked female tennis player, despite Kim Clijsters' victory at the WTA Championships on Monday.
The U.S. Open and French Open champion only reached the semifinals of the elite event, losing to Amelie Mauresmo of France.
But Henin-Hardenne had already accrued enough points to edge ahead of Belgian archrival Clijsters by 75 points.
Clijsters, who beat Mauresmo 6-2 6-0 in the final, had topped the world rankings for most of the season and was narrowly ahead going into the end-of-year tournament in Los Angeles.
Mauresmo of France improved from sixth to fourth, moving ahead of American pair Lindsay Davenport and Jennifer Capriati, after an impressive performance in California.
Serena Williams, who hasn't played since winning Wimbledon in June, held third place but elder sister Venus, also injured since losing to her sister in the Wimbledon final, was edged out of the top 10 by Ai Sugiyama of Japan.
