Lewsey leads massacre of Uruguay
BRISBANE, Australia (Reuters) -- England ran in a World Cup record 17 tries in a crushing 111-13 victory over Uruguay in their final World Cup pool C match in Brisbane. Full-back Josh Lewsey crossed the Uruguay line five times and winger Iain Balshaw, center Mike Catt, scrum-half Andy Gomarsall and replacement Jason Robinson each scored twice. Fly-half Paul Grayson landed 11 conversions and Catt two. Flanker Lewis Moody crossed for England's opening try in the third minute and they led 42-6 at half-time. Winger Dan Luger, center Stuart Abbott and replacement Will Greenwood also scored second-half tries as England ran amok. Prop Pablo Lemoine crashed over for a consolation try for the Uruguayans, and Juan Mencacha kicked two penalties and a conversion for the South American side. For England, who finished top of the Pool after this win, it was a satisfying return to the Suncorp Stadium, formerly Lang Park, where they suffered a 76-0 drubbing by Australia on an ill-fated tour in June 1998. England's quarter-final opponents next weekend depended upon the outcome of New Zealand's game against Wales in Sydney. Balshaw, dropped from the squad last year, was carried off with a leg injury after a hard tackle in the 44th minute. He was replaced by Robinson, whose tries took his tally to 15 since he switched from rugby league three years ago. England prop Jason Leonard moved to within striking distance of Philippe Sella's world cap record when he took the field. The 35-year-old Leonard was drafted into England's starting lineup Saturday after loose head Trevor Woodman suffered a slight back strain, and collected his 110th cap. That put him one short of equaling Frenchman Sella's landmark figure.
