CALIFORNIA, U.S. (Reuters) -- Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Funny Cide is to take his chance in the Breeders' Cup Classic on October 25.
Trainer Barclay Tagg galloped the gelding over the weekend and decided to skip a big race at Belmont Park in New York on October 18 in favor of the Classic, the $4 million highlight of the $14 million meeting at Santa Anita in California.
Tagg was quoted on the Cup website as saying: "He's been training great and we felt it was worth the risk."
Funny Cide's bid to become only the 12th horse in history to achieve the Triple Crown failed in June on a sloppy track at the Belmont Stakes and he could finish only third to Empire Maker.
The presence of Funny Cide boosts the Classic after the recent defections of leading lights Mineshaft, Empire Maker and Candy Ride due to retirement or injury.
Last year's Classic was won by 43-1 outsider Volponi who is set to defend his crown.
