Verplank joins Flesch in the lead
LAS VEGAS, Nevada, (Reuters) -- Scott Verplank fired a 10-under-par 62 to move into a tie for the lead with Steve Flesch after the second round of the Las Vegas Invitational 90-hole tournament. Verplank and Flesch, on 17-under 126, led by two shots from Charles Howell III (65). Tim Herron, who also carded a 62, was three strokes off the pace but was considered to be sharing third place with Howell because of the three courses being used this week. Herron has played the two par-72 courses, the TPC at Summerlin and Southern Highlands Golf Club, while Howell has appeared at Summerlin and the par-71 TPC at The Canyons. Flesch, who shared the overnight lead with Australia's Stuart Appleby, added a seven-under 64 to his opening 62. "I made a lot of putts on the back nine and capitalized on my chances," Flesch said. John Senden of Australia, Craig Barlow and Steve Lowery were tied for fifth place on 14-under. Barlow and Lowery were on 129, Senden on 130. Verplank, one of the early finishers, put together a 10-birdie, no-bogey performance at Summerlin. After starting his round on the back nine, the 39-year-old picked up shots at the 12th and 13th holes before reeling off five birdies in a row from the 15th. Verplank, who won the 1985 Western Open as an amateur, has made the cut in 20 of 23 events this season but has not had a top-10 finish since the U.S. Open in June. Appleby followed up his opening 62 with a three-under 68 to stand four shots off the lead on 13-under 130. World number 11 Phil Mickelson, without a win this season, is on 131 following a seven-under 64. Copyright 2003 Reuters. All rights reserved.
