Hoddle 'devastated' claims Gorman

LONDON, England -- Glenn Hoddle is devastated at being sacked as manager by Tottenham Hotspur, according to his coaching assistant John Gorman.

Gorman was also axed by the club on Sunday, after their worst start to a Premier League season, which leaves them 18th out of 20 teams.

Gorman, like Hoddle a former Spurs player, told BBC radio: "He is Tottenham through and through and we have both worked extremely hard and you just want to be successful."

Gorman added: "Glenn played so many years here and had got so much pride in his work. We wanted to give the Spurs fans success and joy and we never really achieved that. We would have loved to have given them success but it hasn't happened."

Hoddle, who was idolized by Spurs fans during his playing career and hailed on his return as manager in the spring of 2001, was dismissed for what the club called unacceptable results and prospects -- despite spending some 12 million pounds ($19.74 million) on new players in the close season.

Spurs, who have won just three of their last 16 league matches, have appointed former manager David Pleat, now the club's director of football, as caretaker manager while a successor is sought.
