Injury rules Bobo out of World Cup
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- Springbok center Gcobani Bobo will miss the rugby union World Cup after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a warm-up game in Bloemfontein. South Africa beat the provincial Free State Cheetahs 45-24 but Bobo had to go off after landing awkwardly on his knee as he tried to kick the ball, chasing a grubber. "As soon as I went down I shouted at the captain Corne Krige to get me a stretcher," said Bobo. "I knew it was bad." Springbok doctor Uli Schmidt told head coach Rudolf Straeuli that Bob could not go to Australia for the World Cup after a scan confirmed his fears about the injury. Straeuli said he was convinced that Bobo would have emerged as a world star at the tournament. "Gcobani was so enthusiastic about the trip. I have no doubt that at the World Cup the rest of the world would have seen an explosion from Bobo." Johannesburg Lions player Bobo had battled his way back from a previous knee operation which kept him out of the game for a year. "This is the path I have chosen in life and you never know when things are going to go wrong," he said. "It could have happened no matter what."
