Beloki won't return before 2004

MADRID, Spain -- Injured Spanish cyclist Joseba Beloki has abandoned plans to resume racing this season.

Beloki, runner-up in the Tour de France in 2002, suffered a broken right leg, right elbow and right wrist when he crashed during this year's Tour.

"I am recovering fast, but I have to be careful because I could risk causing my elbow injury to flare up again," Beloki said.

The ONCE rider had hoped to race in the Tour of Lombardy in October, the final race in the cycling World Cup season.

"I wanted to race in Lombardy but it would be too risky with the weather that time of year," he said.
