SPECIAL REPORT

(CNN) -- For some actors, nominations can be bittersweet when cast mates are overlooked. For others, a nomination alone is reason to celebrate. And for jokesters like Conan O'Brien, an Emmy nomination is a chance to trash the competition.

Some of this year's Emmy nominees spoke to CNN on Thursday with their reactions.

Conan O'Brien, nominee, variety, music or comedy series, "Late Night With Conan O'Brien"

"This is our first show nomination, which is just great. Everyone here is very happy. ... [After prodding from CNN anchor Kyra Phillips, O'Brien jokes about his competition -- David Letterman, Jay Leno and Jon Stewart] All right, they're freaks and losers, all of them. Is that what you want to hear? I happen to know they're all battling their secret demons and they're into weird, kinky fetishes.

"This [nomination] is timed nicely because we have a big 10th anniversary special coming up in primetime, and it's going to be September 14th. That's going to be a big show. Giant stars.

"[On hosting last year's Emmy show] That was the most fun I think I've ever had on television, was hosting that. It was a lot of fun."

Patricia Heaton, nominee, lead actress in a comedy series, "Everybody Loves Raymond"

"I was wondering if it would happen this year. You kind of think people get sick of you after a while, but apparently not. ... this is going to be our last year. It's even more meaningful. The Emmy I'm looking forward to this year is for the show [comedy series award]. I'm hoping that happens for us. ... We always have a great time together at work and at these award shows, even though the show usually walks away empty handed. It's just become kind of our thing, and we have a great time. It really doesn't matter what happens. We have been lucky to have this kind of run on this kind of show."

Kaczmarek
Kaczmarek kisses the red carpet after she learns of her nomination on Thursday morning.

Jane Kaczmarek, nominee, lead actress in a comedy series, "Malcolm In The Middle"

"I was just stunned. I thought they might give you a little clue that you had or hadn't gotten nominated before we got up there, and they don't. We went through a rehearsal, and they kept certain names out. So, Michael Chiklis, who presented [the nominees] with me, and I were totally in the dark and thought 'Well, we guess we got overlooked because our names weren't included in the list of nominees.' It was about as much reality television as I ever want to experience.

[On her husband Bradley Whitford's nomination for "The West Wing"] "He was nominated. He is at home with horrible kidney stones. Getting the call from me this morning that he was nominated I think maybe made him feel better than the Vicodin. So, I'm grateful to the academy for giving him some pain relief."

Michael Imperioli, nominee, supporting actor in a drama series, "The Sopranos"

[On his "Sopranos" character] "Put a gangster and a junkie together and you get a junkie gangster, and you get nominated, there you go. ... It's exciting to be up against Joey Pantoliano. I love him. I just saw him here in New York about five minutes ago, and it's kind of funny that the two of us are up for the same thing. But James Gandolfini and Edie Falco, they did such great work, especially in the last show. It was unforgettable. And we have three writing nominations, two directing, casting, and it's very exciting."

Nixon
Nixon, left, is competing against "Sex And The City" cast mate Kim Cattrall this year.

Cynthia Nixon, nominee, supporting actress in a comedy series, "Sex And The City"

"We had a short season last year, so we didn't know if we might be overlooked. It was certainly a very happy phone call I got this morning. ... [On competing against cast mate Kim Cattrall] We're used to it. We're all such fans of our own show. I hope that's not crazy to say, but, we just feel like a nomination for anyone on the show is a nomination for all of us."

Anthony Zuiker, show creator, nominated for outstanding drama series, "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation"

"'The Wire,' 'Boomtown,' 'CSI Miami.' There's a lot of great shows. We are in the golden era of television, we hoped for the best, and we got in. With 'The Sopranos' being in there, and [we] being in that company, is a tremendous honor in itself. We just have to keep our fingers crossed, and hope that the gods are aligned that night."
