Elvis film to be adapted for stage
LONDON, England -- Music from the "King," Elvis Presley, will be brought back to life when a new show based on his hit movie "Jailhouse Rock" takes to the boards. A musical based on the 1957 film is due to open in London's West End before the end of the year and in New York's Broadway in 2004. It will follow a young man called Vinnie who finds his love of gospel and R&B music after being sent to prison. His musical career, dogged by corruption, leads him to an understanding that money and fame cannot buy happiness. The show will also include songs from the 1950s. Elvis himself had 18 number one hits in the U.S. including "Hound Dog" and "Heartbreak Hotel" before dying in 1977 aged 42. Director Rob Bettinson, who's show "Buddy" has run for more than 14 years, said: "Although based on the film, the musical will tell a much bigger story." The production will also tell the story of the birth of rock and roll music, added Bettinson. "This extra element will create a brand new piece for the stage, not relying on the audience having seen the film or being an Elvis Presley fan, though Elvis fans will love it too," he said. Writer Alan Janes promised more than nostalgia. "It is at heart a universal story -- a challenge against authority and the pursuit of one's own voice. It is a story that youths of all generations can identify with," he said. "Jailhouse Rock" follows the footsteps of hit musicals "Mamma Mia!" -- based on the Swedish group Abba -- and "We Will Rock You" which feature songs from rock group "Queen." Earlier this week theater promoter Sir Cameron Macintosh announced he would spend £35 million ($58 million) rejuvenating London's West End to encourage visitors to the area.
