McCartney and Mills expecting baby
LONDON, England -- Paul McCartney's wife Heather is pregnant with their first child, a spokesman for the couple has announced. "We are delighted with this happy news," the couple said in a brief statement. The baby is expected later this year, the spokesman said. Heather Mills McCartney, 34, has made no secret of the fact that she wants a baby. Rumors of a pregnancy have circulated over the past few weeks. The couple married at an Irish castle in June 2002. It will be the first baby for Mills McCartney, and the fifth for McCartney. The 60-year-old former Beatle is father to Mary, 33, Stella, 31, and James, 25, and stepfather to Heather, 39, all by his first wife Linda. Three months ago, Mills McCartney, who lost a leg in a motorcycle accident, said she was worried she would never conceive. She told interviewer Michael Parkinson a catalogue of health problems had damaged her fertility. Discussing pregnancy rumors, she said: "They said I'd been pregnant, which is really hurtful, knowing that I've had cancer of the uterus and two ectopic pregnancies. "The chances of me getting pregnant are about that much," she said, holding up her thumb and finger an inch apart. "I'm sure for any woman out there it's hard enough when your family keeps saying: 'When are you going to have a baby, then? Never mind the whole world keeps saying: 'Oh, she's pregnant this week.'" A spokesman for the couple refused to say precisely when the baby is due. McCartney performed in Moscow's Red Square on Saturday, capping his first trip ever to Russia, where his music flourished during the '70s and '80s despite being banned by the communist government. (Full story) Mills-McCartney, who campaigns against the use of land mines, used her husband's trip as an opportunity to lobby Russian President Vladimir Putin on behalf of her charity. She said Tuesday she felt "incredibly optimistic" that she had achieved a "tremendous breakthrough" during a 40-minute meeting with the Russian leader.
