(InStyle) -- Given the title of Missy Elliott's new song "Gossip Folks," it makes sense that the video is set in a place associated with more rumors than The National Enquirer.
"It was all Missy's idea to shoot in a high school," says director Dave Meyers. "Missy's so youthful, she looked like one of the students," says makeup artist Gloria Elias. But the kids were on to her in no time. "It was the middle of a school day, and the kids went bananas," Meyers says.
Elliott relished being the most popular girl on campus, but she had to play quite a different role for the camera. "I had to pretend I was a teenager with ponytails," she says. "In the beginning I'm sort of an outcast and everyone is picking on me. But by the end I'm the boss of the school."
Now that's a star pupil.
Hair
"We were going for a youthful look," says hairstylist Annette Coleman. "The high ponytail made Missy look like a schoolgirl." Coleman first washed Elliott's naturally curly, fine hair. Then she rubbed a dab of Sebastian Molding Mud through the hair to hold the curls in place. She pulled it back into a black scrunchie and sprayed the head with a small amount of Fantasia IC Hair Polisher Mist for shine.
Eyes
"Missy's been doing this for a long time and she's done all that crazy stuff," says Elias. "Now she just wants to be really simple and beautiful. She has great skin and she doesn't need a lot." Elias applied MAC Satin eye shadow in Chill to Elliott's lids "to open up the eyes." She used both MAC pencil eyeliner in Ebony and MAC Crème liner in black to her lash lines for definition and, finally, MAC Pro Lash in Coal Black to both top and bottom lashes.
Lips
MAC Chestnut lip pencil was used to line her lips, followed by MAC Snowgirl Lipglass, which "looks like snow, but there's glitter in it," says Elias.
Clothes
"Missy wanted the clothes to be uniformed," says stylist June Ambrose. "I came up with the idea for it to be Goldmine Academy. Missy's record label is called Goldmine." Elliott shone in a custom yellow Adidas First striped sweat suit and Adidas Samoa sneakers. "I love neon colors and thought this would explode on camera," Ambrose says. "It was really brilliant." The Kangol visor (an Elliott favorite) was dyed yellow to match.
