(InStyle) -- In the coming-of-age story, "Laurel Canyon," Kate Beckinsale plays Alex, a conservative and serious Harvard medical school graduate who moves to Los Angeles with her fiancee, Sam (Christian Bale), to complete her studies.
"In the beginning Kate's hair was mostly worn down and straight," says hairstylist Voni Hinkle. However, while living with Sam's record-producer mother (Frances McDormand), Alex becomes intrigued by her uninhibited, bohemian ways.
Unaccustomed to the loose, laid-back lifestyle, but at the same time drawn to it, she slowly begins to let her hair down. Well, not literally. "As her character changes the hair changes a bit too," says Hinkle. "I added more volume and curl to it and pulled it up into a messy bun."
Hair
To create Beckinsale's simple, Ivy League "polished look," Hinkle began by applying Paul Mitchell leave-in conditioner to her slightly damp hair. "Spread the conditioner evenly starting at the ends and work up to the roots," explains Hinkle.
Next, she blew Beckinsale's hair dry, but not stick-straight -- she wanted the hair to have a bit of body and movement to it. Hinkle then used a one-and-one-quarter-inch-barrel curling iron to give the roots some lift and to put a bend in the hair.
Finally, for shine and control she smoothed Matrix Vavoom Beam Shine Gloss over the ends of the hair.
Makeup
Makeup artist Margot Boccia kept Beckinsale's look clean and natural throughout the movie. "Her character wasn't into makeup, so we kept it simple," says Boccia.
She applied Clé de Peau Beauté Emulsion moisturizer, then dabbed a mixture of Giorgio Armani's Luminous Silk foundation in No. 2 and Sheer Fluid No. 2 on her face. She set the foundation with Skin Alison Raffaele Transparent Finish loose powder. "I didn't want to cover up too much of her beautiful porcelain skin," says Boccia.
Next, Delux Beauty Flush Stick cream blush in Camel was blended onto her cheeks.
Boccia smudged Delux Beauty Cream Powder eye shadow in Burnished Bronze on the lids and up into creases, and lined the upper lash lines with a Lancôme eyeliner in Moss. "I then curled the lashes and added Dior Fascination mascara in Fascinating Plum, which brought out the color in Kate's beautiful green eyes," says Boccia.
To complete the look she colored in the lips with Julie Hewett lip pencil in Nude Noir, topped with Kiehl's lip balm.
