Anti-war calls at Spanish 'Oscars'

MADRID, Spain -- A film with a recurring anti-war message has swept the board at the Goyas -- Spain's national film awards.

"Los Lunes al Sol" (Mondays in the Sun), tells the story of Spanish shipbuilders adjusting to unemployment.

Roman Polanski's "The Pianist" won the Goya for best European film.

It tells the harrowing story of one man's survival in the Warsaw ghetto during World War II.

"Los Lunes al Sol" took five Goya awards, including best picture, best director for

Fernando Leon de Aranoa, best actor for Javier Bardem, a former Oscar nominee, best supporting actor for Luis Tosar and best new actor for Jose Angel Ejido.

Its success was in contrast to the hotly-tipped "Hable con ella" (Talk to Her), which recently won Hollywood's Golden Globe for best foreign-language film and is nominated for awards in Britain and France.

The film, by Oscar-winner Pedro Almodovar, had been nominated for seven awards, but took just one, for best original score.

"Mondays in the Sun" had already received the Spanish film academy's approval over "Talk to Her" as Spain's candidate for an Oscar nomination for best foreign-language film.

The awards bring de Aranoa, 34, out of the shadow of Almodovar, who dominates the Spanish film scene.

Almodovar won the best foreign-language Oscar for 1999's "Todo Sobre Mi Madre" (All About My Mother).

Accepting his award, de Aranoa said: "I would like to dedicate this award to those who every day are denied the right to life and have to struggle each day against unemployment.

"To me they are heroes."

He ended his speech with "No to war!"

Many in the audience wore anti-war pin badges during the awards ceremony in protest against the growing momentum toward a U.S.-led strike on Iraq.

Actors, directors, producers and guests stuck their evening wear with black pins with "No to war" marked in red during the ceremony.

Holding his award for best actor, Bardem urged governments to listen to the "desire for peace of your people."

Spain's prime minister, Jose Maria Aznar, is one of U.S. President George Bush's staunchest supporters for possible military action against Iraq.
