(InStyle) -- In "The Guru," Lexi (Marisa Tomei) is a new age therapy-crazed New York City socialite. "She's on a major search path and is constantly latching onto the next trend -- whatever it is," says costume designer Michael Clancy.

When the guru hired for her birthday party gets drunk and passes out, waiter Ramu Gupta (Jimi Mistry) is tapped to wear the turban, and before you can say "ohm," Lexi's hooked. What she doesn't know is that her faux-Guru is just regurgitating pearls of wisdom he picked up from his porn-star friend Sharonna (Heather Graham). And by the time she does learn he's a fake, it's too late. Lexi -- and her wardrobe -- are already on the road to spirituality.

Hair

"Marisa said that when she was playing the rich girl she had to have rich-girl hair," says hairstylist Angel DeAngelis, "shiny and sleek-looking." DeAngelis started by prepping Tomei's dry hair with Philip B. Rejuvenating Oil. "We left it in for as long as we could, then shampooed it out with Philip B. Peppermint and Avocado shampoo and Philip B. Deep-Conditioning Creme Rinse. Those products make the hair shiny," she says. DeAngelis used Philip B. Drop Dead Straightening Baume before blowing Tomei's hair straight and finishing with a flatiron. "It didn't need much after that," she says.

Makeup

"Marisa wanted a sort of sun-kissed look," says makeup artist David Craig Forrest, so he started by using Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Radiant Touch in Lumin Radiance to cover any imperfections and then added Youngblood Loose Natural Mineral foundation in Sunglow. He then applied Stila Convertible Color in Poppy to her cheeks and finished the look with a light dusting of Estée Lauder Lucidity Translucent loose powder in Medium and a traditional Indian bindi.

Forrest relied on natural colors for Tomei's eyes including Chanel Quadra eye shadow in Dunes for the lids and brow bones, and Chantecaille Lasting eye shadow powder in Amethyst to line around the eyes. "That was very soft," he says, "more of a smudge than a line." He curled Tomei's lashes using a Shu Uemura eyelash curler and finished with a coat of Lancôme Définicils High Definition mascara in black.

Lips

Forrest dabbed a touch of Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Radiant Touch in Lumin Radiance to plump up Tomei's upper lip before lining her mouth with Chantecaille Lip Definer in Natural. He finished by filling in with Chantecaille lipstick in Melon.

Clothes

Clancy uses three words to describe Lexi's pre-guru wardrobe: designer, unusual and expensive. "In the initial part of the movie she's uptown, and that's basically where we shopped," he says. He headed to stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and Barneys New York to find pieces by Ann Demeulemeester, Dries Van Noten, Olivier Theyskens and Dosa. "I just went to the source," he says.

And the same went for her post-guru wardrobe as well. "Once she becomes this spiritual kind of woman her clothes, some of which I embellished or dyed myself, came from the stores in Little India in Queens, N.Y." That's where Clancy picked up the blouse featured here, as well as the beaded necklace and earrings.
