Big movies hog Bafta nominations
LONDON, England -- The raunchy musical "Chicago" and the U.S. blockbuster "Gangs of New York" have taken the bulk of shortlist nominations in the Bafta film awards. The two major cinema hits go head to head this year with 12 nominations each, the awards panel for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts said on Monday. But in an upset for Chicago star Catherine Zeta Jones, she has only been nominated as best supporting actress while her co-star Renee Zellweger takes the leading actress nomination. The pair were pitched against each other for best actress at the Golden Globes award last week. Chicago will be up against Gangs of New York for the best film, along with "The Hours," "The Two Towers" and "The Pianist." The Hours, comes a close third in terms of nominations with 11, including best director for Briton Stephen Daldry who walked away with the award at the Globes. It also has two of its top actresses Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep fighting for best actress. Also competing for the best actress award are Salma Hayek for "Frida" and the surprise inclusion of Halle Berry for "Monster's Ball," the role that won her the 2002 Best Actress Oscar. In the leading male category, newcomer Adrien Brody received his first nomination for "The Pianist" and faces competition from awards veterans Michael Caine for "The Quiet American," Jack Nicholson for "About Schmidt," Daniel Day-Lewis for "Gangs of New York" and Nicolas Cage for "Adaptation." The second Lord of the Rings movie The Two Towers competes for nine Baftas, plus the Orange film of the year prize which is voted for by cinemagoers. Although it is not a full Bafta, it will be handed out at the ceremony on February 23, to be hosted by comedian Stephen Fry. The Baftas come a month before the Oscars.
