Brittany Murphy: 'Just Married'

(InStyle) -- Wild child Brittany Murphy, the petite star who relishes taking real-life fashion risks, had to play it safe in her new comedy, "Just Married."

Murphy plays a pristine, pampered princess who weds slacker -- offscreen boyfriend -- Ashton Kutcher, and embarks on the Italian honeymoon from hell.

To get into character, Murphy had to ditch her risque outfits and cutting-edge cut for sleek, subtly streaked tresses and a simple wardrobe. "She's this wealthy writer, so I wanted her to look classic and feminine," explains costume designer Debra McGuire.

Murphy's makeup was equally toned down. "She's naturally beautiful and has one standard look throughout the movie," says makeup artist Tricia Sawyer. "It was mainly blush, lip gloss and shaped eyebrows."

Hair

"Brittany normally likes something different, something real wild, but for this role, she needed to be clean and pretty," says hairstylist and Estilo salon co-owner Roberto Ramos, who regularly cuts and colors Murphy's hair. "She's a rich girl who has really simple, classic but slightly stylish hair."

First, Ramos gave the blond Murphy long bangs, with slight layers around the face, and jagged ends so her tresses would have some chop to them. Next, he straightened Murphy's mop. While her hair was still wet, Ramos added Nutri-Liss by Kérastase to the ends to help smooth out Murphy's naturally curly locks. He then dabbed Kérastase Expanseur Corps on her roots to add volume.

After blow-drying her hair straight, Ramos touched up the ends with Magic Move Light to give it texture, and then locked it into place with a spritz of Sebastian Shaper hairspray.

Makeup

Even as her Venice honeymoon goes from dreamy to disastrous, Murphy remains every bit the beautiful blushing bride. "Foundation and skin care were important," says Sawyer. "We were going for that young, fresh look and shot on location in Italy where it was really cold. So we really had to focus on keeping her skin consistent."

First, Sawyer cleansed Murphy's face with Prada Purifying Milk, and then relied on Crčme de La Mer moisturizer to protect the star's skin in the extreme weather conditions. She then used Christian Dior Diorlight pressed powder in Light to give Murphy overall smoothness, followed by Sue Devitt Studio blush in Vanuatu for that rosy glow.

To make Murphy's round brown orbs stand out, Sawyer used Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel eyeliner in Sepia Ink on Murphy's top lids, and then defined her brows with MAC Fling pencil, which happens to be one of Murphy's must-haves in everyday life.

Murphy got her kissable pout with MAC lip pencil in Cranberry and Delux Beauty lip gloss in Asher. "Or, she used Bonne Bell Dr. Pepper Lip Smacker," says Sawyer. "It's a great color and she loves it."

Clothes

Wardrobe-wise, Murphy looks like a million bucks. "She's a rich girl, and Ashton is boyish and athletic," explains McGuire. "I needed to contrast their backgrounds." And McGuire had her work cut out for her: "Everything we bought had to be reshaped and recut because Brittany's tiny and we didn't want anything to be boxy," she says.

Once she sorted out the size issues, McGuire stuck to pink, navy and burgundy colors, dressing Murphy in a pink velour sweat suit, Juicy Couture corduroy pants and a wine-red J. Crew coat. Other key pieces include Prada shirts, which were small and tapered, Emporio Armani sweaters, Earl Jeans and leather pants, and a Juicy Couture denim jacket.

Murphy kicked back in Manolo Blahnik and Jill Stuart boots, and toted around a dainty black Prada bag.
