Elliott Smith memorial concertNEW YORK (Billboard) -- Beck, Bright Eyes and Beth Orton are among the artists who will perform November 3 during a memorial concert for late singer/songwriter Elliott Smith. Set for the Henry Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, the event will feature performances of only Smith's songs. Also slated to appear are Grandaddy, Radar Bros, Rilo Kiley, Future Pigeon and as-yet-unannounced special guests. Proceeds from the show will benefit the Elliott Smith Foundation for Abused Children. Tickets are available via TicketWeb. Along with the musical performances, Steve Hanft's Smith documentary "Strange Parallel" will be screened. Smith, 34, died October 21 after apparently stabbing himself in the heart. According to a source, he did so using a steak knife at his girlfriend's apartment in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. Bloomberg meets J.LoNEW YORK (AP) -- Ben and Jen finally made it to City Hall, but it had nothing to do with a marriage license.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez were there to visit Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who expressed his admiration for Lopez a few months ago. "For those of you who were wondering, I finally got my date with Jennifer Lopez," Bloomberg said Tuesday as Hollywood's most overexposed couple arrived late for a scheduled event. "This is worse than the Oscars," Lopez said amid a crowd of television cameras and photographers. Bloomberg earlier said he would be charmed to meet the pop star who hails from the Bronx. "The Blue Room isn't exactly ... some romantic restaurant, but you know, heck, Ben's here, and you take what you can get," Bloomberg joked. Lopez showed up at City Hall, with Affleck in tow, for the formation of a new commission to attract Latino entertainment and media to the city. Lopez will be its honorary chairwoman. "I never thought I'd be here next to such greats as [salsa star] Willie Colon and with the mayor of New York City here at City Hall," Lopez said. "It's a real honor for me." Lopez was wearing the now-famous $1.2 million pink emerald-cut diamond engagement ring presented to her by Affleck, who shied away from the attention and stood off in a corner. Priestley back on trackNEW YORK (AP) -- Jason Priestley, who suffered major injuries in a crash at the Kentucky Speedway last year, hasn't closed the door to a return to racing.
"It's something that I really enjoy, it's something that I'm quite good at -- so it's hard for me to say I'll never race again," he tells People magazine in its November 3 issue. Has Priestley had the desire to go back? "Oh, yeah," he tells the magazine. "Maybe this winter I'll do a little testing and see how I feel. I turn on the TV and watch all the guys I used to race with. It makes me miss it so much." The former "Beverly Hills, 90210" star was badly hurt on August 11, 2002, when his car spun out of control at 180 mph and hit the wall nearly head on during practice for the Infiniti Pro Series, a developmental circuit for the Indy Racing League. Priestley tells the magazine he doesn't remember anything from the crash, and he praises the surgeons "who put me together." "I really aggressively pursued my recovery, from getting out of bed to trying to get out of a wheelchair to trying to get to where I am now, which is 100 percent," the 34-year-old actor said. His new film, "Die, Mommie, Die," opens October 31. P. Diddy to run marathonNEW YORK (AP) -- Sean "P. Diddy" Combs will run in the New York City Marathon -- sore knee and all.
His trainer, Mark Jenkins, expects the 33-year-old hip-hop mogul to finish Sunday's 26.2-mile race. Jenkins will run alongside Combs, who is competing to raise money for charity. "With the crowd out there and the motivation with charity and people being behind him, he will definitely finish," Jenkins said Tuesday. "Even if he has to crawl, he is going to finish." Combs hurt his knee during training. There is pain when he runs, but running the marathon will not cause permanent damage. Jenkins helps celebrities in the music and entertainment business get in shape. He was working with singer Mary J. Blige when Combs noticed she looked great. Blige referred Combs to Jenkins, and they started working together four months ago. Jenkins suggested Combs run a marathon. Combs figured, why not? They started training in September and received advice from doctors, chefs and coaches. A few weeks ago, they ran 20 miles through Harlem and the Bronx with former marathon star Alberto Salazar. "People were screaming, 'Puffy keep going!'" said Jenkins, who has worked with Beyonce Knowles, Brandy and LL Cool J, among others. "It was such a motivating environment." Star Jones' Payless lineNEW YORK (AP) -- You'll soon be able to walk in Star Jones' shoes.
The Starlet by Star Jones line will be available at Payless ShoeSource stores starting in November, the company announced recently. She is a self-proclaimed shoe junkie who claims to have 500 pairs of shoes in her closet. "We played with the latest trends, colors and styles to create a collection that delivers designer flair at affordable prices," Jones said in a statement. The line, which ranges from $15.99 to $21.99, includes a strappy dress sandal, a T-strap style, a mule with brocade velvet, a two-piece silhouette with an ankle strap and a strappy slide. The styles will be offered in wine, chocolate brown, forest green, champagne and deep black. The Associated Press & Reuters contributed to this report.
