(PEOPLE) -- Right now Hollywood's trendiest are exploring the silk route -- snapping up embroidered apparel that could have been inspired by Flower Drum Song.
The sexy florals cropped up in spring collections and blossomed on the red carpet soon after.
Gucci updated the Japanese kimono (Liv Tyler), while Roberto Cavalli created a spicy chinois minidress (Thalia).
"These pieces make their statement with color and texture," says Cavalli. "They require confidence to wear."
Especially when it's a direct translation like Lisa Bonet's vintage sheath or Robinne Lee's cheongsam: "It's from Chinatown in L.A. and cost $22," says Lee.
Treasures from the East, indeed.
