(PEOPLE) -- Cargo pants took off on runways this season, with every major designer doing revved-up versions of this casual standard.
The difference between these trousers and the ones you wear on weekend errands?
Swanky fabrics like silk and satin, feminine details like a soft drawstring leg and a range of sophisticated colors.
"If there's one thing to add to your wardrobe this spring, it's cargo pants," says Pilar Chira Steinborn, a VH1 senior stylist. "They're classic and comfortable, with a style for everybody -- and so many ways to wear them."
Christina Applegate and Tiffani Thiessen took the directly sexy route, pairing their cargos with skin-baring tops.
Nicole Kidman created a look of her own with a fitted top and tweed jacket.
The only rule for these upgrades: Wear a strappy shoe.
"Put on a nice high heel, and dress it up," advises Carmen Electra.
Yep. These off-duty pants are making their out-on-the-town rounds.
