(InStyle) -- "Where's the man could ease a heart/ Like a satin gown," reads "The Satin Dress," Dorothy Parker's 1926 ode to silken apparel.
The shiny fabric, like the smooth prose, is equally relevant today -- good men are still hard to find, and satin continues to satisfy a woman's style needs.
By blending resplendent silk and satin with more modern materials, actresses like Maria Bello and Brittany Murphy are radiating both elegance and practicality -- something even the prickly Parker would approve of.
"I dig my satin cargo pants because they're casual, but the fabric makes them great for dressing up," observes "Ed's" Julie Bowen, who regretfully finds one flaw with the author's beloved satin.
"The only bummer is the wrinkles," she laments. "So I'm working on a portable taxicab steamer."
