LONDON, England -- Rock star and actress Courtney Love has been cautioned by British police over an alleged "air rage" incident on a transatlantic flight.

The American star was arrested at Heathrow airport on Tuesday on suspicion of disruptive behaviour and endangering an aircraft which carries a possible two-year prison sentence.

Love, widow of Nirvana star Kurt Cobain, was accused of hurling abuse at cabin crew during the Virgin Atlantic flight from Los Angeles.

She was arrested and later released after being questioned for several hours.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman told the Press Association: "She has been cautioned under the Public Order Act for causing harassment, alarm and distress to another person and has now been released from police custody."

Under British law, a caution is a formal acknowledgement that a person has committed an offence and acts as a warning regarding future behaviour. It does not count as a conviction, but may be brought up in future court proceedings.

As the singer left Heathrow Police Station, Love said: "I cussed at a lady -- my daughter always said I had a potty mouth.

"I cussed at a lady named Mary, she wasn't letting my friend into first class and I said, 'Why are you being such a bitch about it?'"

Asked how she felt about her treatment at the hands of the airline she said: "I think that I have been flying British Airways for a long time and I will continue to do so.

"This is my second time on Virgin and my first time wasn't so great either."

The flight crew were said to have tried to calm her after she lost her temper but she allegedly refused to sit in her seat and put her seat belt on.

Flight staff felt she was being so abusive and disruptive that the captain decided to call the airport as flight VS08 was on its approach to Heathrow.

Staff on the ground alerted police who were waiting on the tarmac.

Love is reportedly in London for this week's benefit at the Old Vic theatre by Sir Elton John and actor Kevin Spacey. (Full story)
