Supermodel Schiffer gives birth
LONDON, England -- Supermodel Claudia Schiffer became a mother on Thursday as she gave birth to a boy by Caesarean section. The as-yet-unnamed 7-pound (3.17 kg) baby was delivered at a central London hospital. Schiffer's film producer husband, Matthew Vaughn, was at the birth. The baby is his first child as well. "Both parents are utterly thrilled at the birth of their first child and both mother and baby are doing very well," a spokeswoman told the UK Press Association. Schiffer, 32, was admitted to London's exclusive Portland Hospital on Thursday morning for the planned procedure. She joins a list of celebrities who have given birth by Caesarean at the hospital, including actress Elizabeth Hurley and Spice Girl Victoria Beckham. The model -- who also has appeared in a number of films including "Zoolander" and "Richie Rich" -- had hoped to have a natural birth. Doctors advised her to have a Caesarean after she injured a foot in November, her spokeswoman said. "Claudia crushed one of her feet in an accident in November and has been on crutches ever since so doctors advised her against a natural delivery," the spokeswoman said. "The couple have yet to decide on a name for the baby but all are expected to return home in a few days," she added. The couple met at a dinner party in Los Angeles two years ago and were married last May in Suffolk, England, near their Elizabethan country home. Schiffer began modelling in 1987 while she was a student after being discovered in a German nightclub. Her big break came when she landed a deal to star in the ad campaign for jeans label Guess? and went on to become one of the world's most photographed women. She has now appeared on the cover of more than 700 magazines. Vaughn, 31, is the producer of hit movies such as "Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch," which he made with director Guy Ritchie.
