SNL taking on Super Bowl

HOLLYWOOD, California (Variety) -- NBC is tackling the Super Bowl again, pitting a 20-minute edition of "Saturday Night Live" against ABC's Shania Twain halftime spectacular on January 26.

The network saw modest success last year with a two-part, Playboy-themed edition of "Fear Factor" that aired during halftime and after the big game. This year, NBC brass have decided to focus solely on halftime.

At around 7 p.m. EST, NBC will begin airing a repeat 90-minute edition of "Fear Factor." When the Super Bowl hits halftime, NBC will interrupt "Fear" with a live broadcast of "SNL's" Jimmy Fallon/Tina Fey-anchored "Weekend Update," which will likely include several popular characters and bits from the sketch laffer.

The rest of "Fear" will air once "Update" ends.

NBC brass are still hammering out a deal with "SNL" executive producer Lorne Michaels and key talent to do the special, but a pact is expected. "We just hate the idea of rolling over on any night," NBC Entertainment president Jeff Zucker said. "It's not in our DNA."

NBC isn't the first network to attack on Super Bowl Sunday. Fox pioneered such cheeky stunts in 1992, when it aired a special live edition of sketch comedy "In Living Color" during halftime of CBS' coverage of the game. The special stole a huge chunk of CBS' viewers.

'Ocean's 12' in the works

NEW YORK (Variety) -- Director Steven Soderbergh and actor George Clooney are eyeing a March 2004 start date for "Ocean's Twelve," a sequel to the hit 2001 Las Vegas crime caper.

Warner Bros. is looking to lock down Brad Pitt, while other "Ocean's Eleven" regulars may return along with new additions. A holiday 2004 release date is being eyed.

The catalyst for its move toward the starting gate came when WB asked "Timeline" screenwriter George Nolfi to rewrite his "Honor Among Thieves" screenplay with an "Ocean's Eleven" bent. The studio originally bought "Honor Among Thieves" two years ago as a potential directing vehicle for John Woo, but the project stalled.

Tapping a pre-existing script for a sequel is not unprecedented. It happened on "Die Hard With a Vengeance," a film that was stuck until Fox tapped a script it owned called "Simon Says."

"Ocean's Twelve" could be the next jobs for both Soderbergh and Clooney, who are also production partners. They both vowed to take time off after doing several movies back to back, including the Soderbergh-directed "Solaris," which starred Clooney, and Clooney's directing debut, "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind."

Lopez giving his all

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- With his namesake situation comedy winning its time slot for ABC, comedian George Lopez doesn't mind the long hours he's working these days.

"The show may go one more episode or 100, but it's not going to fail because I didn't give enough of myself," Lopez said.

Lopez, a 41-year-old who has worked as a disc jockey and a standup comic, mines a lot of his own life story for "The George Lopez Show."

Lopez is enjoying enormous success, but that didn't come quickly. "After struggling through the '90s just to feed my family and pay my bills, this is a pretty good time," Lopez told the Los Angeles Times for an article published Sunday. "If you consider being a road comedian a career, good luck."

Lopez got his shot at prime time when actress Sandra Bullock caught his standup routine two years ago. The actress was interested in developing a television project with a Latino story line. "I fell in love with his life story," Bullock said.

Lopez said he enjoys putting stories from his life into the show. "I'm giving my time, my life, my stories -- good and bad -- to this show, and after I don't have any more stories to tell, I'll walk away, having really done it."
