DENVER, Colorado (Reuters) -- The 19-year-old woman who accused Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant of rape has checked into a medical treatment center to escape intense media scrutiny and death threats, according to a published report, but officials on Wednesday declined comment.

The Vail Daily newspaper said the woman, who worked as a concierge at a resort near the Colorado ski resort when she said the 25-year-old basketball star attacked her, went to an undisclosed medical center.

The woman's attorney, John Clune, was not immediately available to for comment and Eagle County District Attorney Mark Hurlbert's spokeswoman Krista Flannigan said, "Out of respect for the privacy of the victim and her family we are not commenting."

The publicity surrounding the case has been daunting and officials have tried to shelter the woman. But four months before she said she was assaulted, she was taken to a hospital because police considered her "a danger to herself."

The woman, who has been identified on the Internet but not by mainstream media, has been vilified in some circles and her character came under the microscope during Bryant's preliminary hearing when defense attorney Pamela Mackey asked if the woman's injuries could be due to her having "sex with three men in three days."

A man was charged by California authorities in September for offering to kill the woman for $3 million. An Iowa man was accused of leaving a threatening message on an answering machine at the woman's home.

Bryant, who has not yet entered a formal plea in court, has denied he raped the woman, calling their encounter on June 30 consensual sex. He is next due in court in Eagle, Colorado on December 19.
