(CNN) -- A senior inspector with the U.S. Marshals Service was shot to death on a street corner in New York City Monday morning, officials with the service said.
The inspector's name was not yet being released, and it is not clear whether the shooting was job-related, the officials said.
A New York Police Department spokesman said the shooting occurred at the corner of 138th Street and 12th Avenue, and involved a white male shot in the head. Police received the call just after 6:30 a.m.
The man was on duty at the time and was in upper Manhattan on his way to meet another deputy U.S. marshal, a Marshals Service spokesman said. The two were to discuss a case they were working on, he said.
The police spokesman said the Marshals Service would lead the investigation.
