(CNN) -- The parents of a 12-year-old boy who was under court order to begin chemotherapy for a rare form of cancer surrendered Wednesday to Utah authorities on kidnapping charges.
Daren and Barbara Jensen turned themselves in at a courthouse in Salt Lake City, where they made an initial court appearance. A judge promptly released them on their own recognizance.
The two were charged with kidnapping after they fled to Idaho with their son, Parker.
Kent Morgan, a spokesman for the Salt Lake County district attorney's office, said the kidnapping charges currently stand.
Last week, the family agreed to get chemotherapy for their son if that recommendation comes from a new physician assigned to diagnose the boy.
The district attorney's office has said the parents will not be taken into custody while Parker is under treatment.
