Man walks into a bar, kills computer
LAFAYETTE, Colorado (Court TV) -- George Doughty won't have any more problems with his computer. But the computer will never work again either. Doughty was accused Sunday of shooting his Dell laptop four times with a Smith & Wesson revolver in the middle of his Sportsman's Inn Bar and Restaurant. He then allegedly hung the destroyed laptop on the wall "like a hunting trophy," said Lt. Rick Bashor of the Lafayette Police Department. Doughty, 48, who owns the establishment, entered the bar from his office on Sunday morning. He told the two patrons and bartender that he was going to shoot his computer before returning to his office. Some 30 minutes later, police said, Doughty set his laptop on the floor, warned the customers to cover their ears and fired away. No one was injured. Police learned of the shooting when an employee of the bar called the bartender to ask if there was anything going on. The bartender then told her about the incident and she notified authorities, Bashor said. Doughty never explained what prompted his actions, but told police that it seemed like the right thing to do at the time. Because Doughty is accused of putting the customers and bartender in danger, he was arrested on suspicion of felony menacing, reckless endangerment and the prohibited use of weapons. Accused horse thief caught red-hoofedWELLINGTON, Florida -- A Chicago veterinarian is under arrest after allegedly stealing three horses and trying to disguise their identity by painting them with Rust-Oleum. Cathy Crighton, 44, is being held without bond on charges of grand theft, burglary and cruelty to animals. Deputies arrested her over the weekend at a barn where they found San Diego, a 13-year-old gelding lured from his paddock in late January and apparently kept in a nearby stable. His white legs and the white stripe on his face had been spray-painted with the oil-based black enamel. The horse, worth an estimated $100,000, suffered blisters around his nose and could be scarred for life, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff's Department spokesman Paul Miller. Deputies also recovered two other expensive show horses reported stolen last year from Illinois in the same barn. One of them, Scooby Doo, also had paint on his legs and feet. Miller said authorities were notified after a stable owner, who did not want to be identified, spotted Crighton applying paint to one of the horse's legs several days ago. He remembered news reports of a stolen horse, and eventually found San Diego's owner. The man then led the owner to the horse on Saturday. A subsequent search of Crighton's home uncovered stolen riding equipment, Miller said. She also faces three burglary charges in connection with thefts of pottery and teak furniture from the Twelve Oaks Green Market, west of Delray Beach. Baby does ride-along on robberyAlbuquerque, New Mexico -- A man is accused of robbing a convenience store last week while toting along his 9-month-old son, who was in a child-safety seat. Jarrod Devinney then ran with the seat, baby Jacob and about $120 to a nearby hotel, where the 22-year-old dad was promptly caught, according to police. "He's running with the child. He kind of sticks out," a police department spokesman said. The store clerk told police that a man with a baby had come inside, bought a candy bar and left. He then came back in and asked if he could stand inside the store because it was too cold outside for the baby. When there weren't many customers in the store, Devinney allegedly stuffed his hand inside his jacket pocket and demanded cash. The clerk refused, but Devinney told her that if she didn't give him the money, he would shoot her, according to police. The clerk handed over all the $20 bills and was trying to give Devinney the rest of the cash when he said he had enough money. He then ran off with the baby, falling in the process, police said. Police said the robber fled toward hotels, and officers who checked out a Ramada Inn discovered only one registered guest with a baby. They found Devinney in his room. Police suspect Devinney robbed the store for cash to buy heroin, but didn't have time to buy the drugs before he was arrested. Devinney remains in the Bernalillo County Detention Center on $37,500 bond. He was charged with robbery, child abuse and tampering with evidence. Bride gets two years for meth kissTERRE HAUTE, Indiana -- Vivian Frazier will never forget the first time she kissed her new husband. The smooch cost her two years in prison. Frazier, 32, who married Jeremy Guinther in an Indiana jailhouse on July 5, passed two grams of methamphetamine to Guinther in a kiss during the ceremony. Frazier was sentenced last week to two years in prison after pleading guilty to a felony charge of trafficking with an inmate. The exchange was caught when a Vigo County jail guard became suspicious after seeing Guinther with a slight bulge in his cheek. When ordered to open his mouth, Guinther swallowed, according to a sheriff's department report. The packet of drugs was recovered during a hospital stay, prosecutors said. Guinther, 26, pleaded guilty in December to a felony drug possession charge in connection with the wedding kiss. He also pleaded guilty to unrelated charges of theft and drug possession and is currently serving a two-year sentence in a state prison. Another result of the drug-passing kiss is that the jail now has a rule prohibiting kissing during lock-up weddings.
