HUNTSVILLE, Alabama (CNN) -- A north Alabama man accused of shooting five people, killing four of them, in a dispute over $20 and a compact disc player was charged with capital murder Wednesday, the Madison County district attorney's office said.

Emanuel Byrd Patterson, 23, also was charged with two counts of attempted murder in Tuesday's shooting spree at a temporary employment agency.

The suspect has been jailed without bond at an undisclosed location, said district attorney spokeswoman Heather Douglas.

"As we understand it, Patterson began arguing over CDs, a CD player, and $20 someone owed him," Douglas said. "Then he opened fire with a semiautomatic in the lobby of Labor Ready Inc." Labor Ready is a company providing temporary manual labor.

After that, the suspect fled to his apartment building, where he stayed until surrendering to officers around 3 p.m. (4 p.m. EST) Tuesday, she said.

Billy Knox Jr., 22, his father, Billy Knox Sr., 61, and Benjamin Ferguson, 47 -- all of Huntsville -- died at the scene, Douglas said.

Two men wounded in the attack, which occurred about 6:30 a.m. (7:30 a.m. EST), were taken to Huntsville Hospital. David Seiler, 46, died on the operating table, hospital spokeswoman Terri Bryson told CNN.

Seiler was from Tennessee but his hometown was not immediately available, Douglas said.

Royce Henderson, 46, of Huntsville who had been shot in the leg, was treated and released Tuesday, Bryson said.

Patterson was charged with two counts of attempted murder because he attempted to fire on a sixth person, a woman, according to the district attorney's office.

"Patterson was charged with one count of capital murder involving the death of two or more people in a single course of conduct," Douglas said.

Patterson is to have a hearing in the next day or two, Douglas said.

The suspect is on probation for carrying a pistol without a permit, she said.
