GlaxoSmithKline stops selling drugs to Canadian pharmacies
RALEIGH, North Carolina (CNN) -- Drug maker GlaxoSmithKline decided Tuesday to stop selling prescription drugs to Canadian wholesalers and pharmacies that export medicines to the United States. Earlier this month, Glaxo had issued an ultimatum to Canadian pharmacies to stop selling drugs to Americans at substantially lower prices -- sometimes 20 percent to 80 percent cheaper -- or else the drug maker would stop selling to them. In a written statement, Glaxo said it "understands the concerns of Americans without prescription drug coverage but believes that ordering medicines over the Internet from Canada and other countries is not the answer and puts patients at risk." Glaxo says it has provided more than $150 million in free medicine to those most in need in the United States and has offered savings up to 40 percent through two prescription drug assistance programs it administers. "GSK is committed to working with the American government and other stakeholders to ensure that those who need our medicines are able to obtain access," said Glaxo U.S. Pharmaceuticals President Chris Viehbacher. "We support passage of a Medicare prescription drug benefit that will help ensure that patients have a better alternative to the illegal importation of medicine."
