WASHINGTON (AP) -- Hundreds of employees of the national capital's public school system will be getting pink slips for Christmas.
By New Year's Day, up to 545 teachers and 226 administrative and support personnel will have been told that they are losing their jobs, Louis J. Erste, chief operating officer of the District of Columbia Public Schools, said Tuesday.
"The timeline does unfortunately coincide with the end of December," Erste said. Union rules require 30 days' notice, so letters must go out by December 29 for the cuts to take effect when the semester ends January 29.

The layoffs decision was announced after rumors of impending job cuts began circulating among the school system's 14,058 full and part time personnel.
The system must cut personnel spending by $38 million, in part to cover the cost of a negotiated raise due contract employees, officials said.
The system's 65,099 students attend classes at 167 schools and learning centers. As many as 10 percent of the school system's 5,400 teachers could be laid off.
