S. Korea opens higher, Australia down
HONG KONG, China (CNN) -- Markets in South Korea opened higher Tuesday. But Australia is down and Japan is closed for a national holiday. Seoul's Kospi is up almost 1 percent percent to 582.88, following Monday's slide to a 15-month closing low of 577.25. Gainers include carmakers, chipmakers and telecom stocks. Ssangyong Motor is up more than 3.5 percent. In Australia, the S&P/ASX200 is slightly lower, down 0.26 percent to 2882.70. Foster's, the biggest Australian beer and wine group, reported a 4.1 percent lift in first-half profit to A$335.3 million, slightly below analysts' expectations. Foster's shares are off 0.23 percent at A$4.39. Woodside Petroleum is up 1.1 percent to A$11.02 and Australia's biggest stock, News Corp, is 0.64 percent higher at A$10.97. But troubled insurer and funds group AMP has slipped again, down 3.3 percent to A$8.41, and Commonwealth Bank is down 0.9 percent to A$26.02. Samsung higherSouth Korea's biggest stock, Samsung Electronics, is up 0.9 percent to 272,000 won, after a rise in U.S. chip stocks. Leading exporter Hyundai Motor is up 2.1 percent to 26,450 won and investor favorite SK Telecom is up 1.24 percent to 163,000 won. In the United States on Monday, markets closed higher, with the Dow Jones industrial average putting on 0.7 percent to 7,920.11 and the Nasdaq composite adding 1.1 percent to 1,296.69. New Zealand's NZSE Top 40 is about half a percent higher at 1,957.37. Taiwan and Singapore are slightly higher in early trade. Tokyo's market resumes Wednesday after the National Foundation Day holiday on Tuesday. On Monday, the key Nikkei 225 average put on 0.44 percent to 8,484.93, ending a two-session losing streak.
