Maxis seen in Ericsson 3G deal

Story Tools

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (Reuters) -- Malaysia's second biggest cellular phone operator, Maxis Communications, will award high-speed third-generation (3G) mobile network contracts to Sweden's Ericsson, a newspaper reported Thursday.

A Maxis official declined to comment on the report in The Star, but said a signing ceremony with Ericsson was scheduled for 0630 GMT.

Maxis would appoint Ericsson as its new wireless infrastructure provider, the Star said, quoting unidentified sources.

The newspaper did not put a value on the contract but said it would involve an upgrade of Maxis' existing networks and a 3G pilot project in the capital, Kuala Lumpur.

Forty percent of Malaysians have mobile phones. This year the government approved the building of 3G networks by the two largest operators, Telekom Malaysia and Maxis.
