LONDON, England (CNN) -- Egalitarianism, job opportunities, flexibility and honesty make some companies great to work for, according to a survey of European workers.

The best European firms at creating this work environment include Scandinavian clothes retailer H&M and water-pump-supplier Grundfos as well as Italian carmaker Ferrari and supermarket Unes.

Other companies to reach the Fortune Top 10 in 2003 are Intel, the micro processors-maker; Nestle the Swiss food conglomerate; drinks company Bacardi Martini; French cement-maker Lafarge; German pharmaceuticals Schering; and Spanish co-operative Mondragon.

None of last year's Top 10, which included L'Oreal, Nokia, Porsche, Pret A Manger and Skandia, make it into this year's list.

Owning shares does not necessarily rank as a desired perk among employees -- possibly a reflection of the current stock market downturn -- but good cafes, job training and physical centres do.

But the most important things employees look for are team spirit, being allowed to show initiative, clear communication between managers and staff, and the sense that "everyone's voice is heard."

One executive described working at Ferrari as "like working at the Vatican."

While a factory hand at Mondragon said his workplace was the "difference between living in a house or a hotel."

He added: "The house is like Mondragon -- you have decision-making power, and you know all the people around. In a hotel you don't have that. You don't know who is next door."

Fortune magazine, owned by CNN's parent company AOL Time Warner, canvassed a variety of people to compile its list including journalists, securities analysts, professors, social investment researchers, and consultants.

Sixty companies were considered which were then whittled down to 12 after further research. Two were then eliminated after visits to the sites. The 10 are not listed in particular order.

"Each was impressive, with a distinctive corporate culture," Fortune said.

"What distinguished the final 10 was that people simply love to go to work."
