Bush: 'I'm in pretty good shape ... I really am'

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Check out the links below to hot political stories around the country this morning. The Bush White House • President Bush and his campaign aides say they're downright pleased that recent polls show the president's approval numbers are holding steady if not going up. In a recent pre-trip interview, the president told a reporter: "I'm in pretty good shape, politically. I really am. I didn't mean to sound defensive. But I am. Politicians, by the way, who pay attention to the polls are doomed, trying to chase opinion when what you need to do is lead, set the tone."
The Washington Post: President rallying support in polls • As expected, the Bush campaign's third quarter haul of $49.5 million put the Democrats' fundraising to shame. The president right now is on track to reach his $170 million goal. Howard Dean will fall just shy of his $15 million goal, bringing in $14.8 million for the quarter.
The New York Times: Bush's $70 million war chest dwarfs that of Democrats • Displaying once again his Midas touch when it comes to fund raising, President Bush raked in $49.5 million over the past three months for his re-election bid -- a total that appears to surpass the collective haul of his nine Democratic rivals, according to campaign officials. The Washington Post: Bush campaign raises a record $49.5 million The White House, 2004 • John Edwards plans to vote against the president's $87 billion request to fund continued operations and reconstruction in Iraq and Afghanistan. Edwards says to vote yes would be "giving a stamp of approval to what this president is doing now."
The Charlotte News and Observer: Edwards opposes Iraq plan • John Kerry rounded out a lengthy campaign swing through New Hampshire with pointed attacks against Howard Dean and Wesley Clark's fitness for office.

Candidates are well aware that the issues discussed tonight and the positions they take will be crucial in swaying the 50 and older set.

For independent, or undeclared, likely primary voters, the percentage of undecided is at least as high."
