WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Check out the links below to hot political stories around the country this morning.

The Bush White House

• President Bush and his campaign aides say they're downright pleased that recent polls show the president's approval numbers are holding steady if not going up. In a recent pre-trip interview, the president told a reporter: "I'm in pretty good shape, politically. I really am. I didn't mean to sound defensive. But I am. Politicians, by the way, who pay attention to the polls are doomed, trying to chase opinion when what you need to do is lead, set the tone."

• As expected, the Bush campaign's third quarter haul of $49.5 million put the Democrats' fundraising to shame. The president right now is on track to reach his $170 million goal. Howard Dean will fall just shy of his $15 million goal, bringing in $14.8 million for the quarter.

• Displaying once again his Midas touch when it comes to fund raising, President Bush raked in $49.5 million over the past three months for his re-election bid -- a total that appears to surpass the collective haul of his nine Democratic rivals, according to campaign officials.
