What they're saying about the recall

Story Tools

(CNN) -- A court order delaying California's recall election prompted reactions from many of the central figures. Here is some of what was said:

"The choice between holding a hurried, constitutionally infirm election and one held a short time later that assures voters that the 'rudimentary requirements of equal treatment and fundamental fairness are satisfied' is clear."

-- 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals

----------

"Historically, the courts have upheld the rights of voters, and I expect that the court will do so again in this case."

-- Arnold Schwarzenegger, Republican recall candidate

----------

"We will continue our campaign until there is finality in the courts."

-- Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, Democratic recall candidate

----------

"This is an outrageous decision by an outrageous court, and I've got every confidence that it will be overturned. This is the most-reversed court in the United States, and for good reason."

-- State Sen. Tom McClintock, Republican recall candidate

----------

"To those who say this will upset things, I suppose one answer is in fact this is going to give the voters of California more time to consider the issues and the character and the substance of the candidates."

-- ACLU lawyer Mark Rosenbaum

----------

"It seems to me that the more people think about the recall, the more that decide to oppose it."

-- Gov. Gray Davis

----------

"I've been speaking out about the problem of the disenfranchisement of voters -- particularly poor and minority voters -- for many years, and I'm happy that the courts are now addressing the issue."

-- Arianna Huffington, independent recall candidate

----------

"A panel of three liberal judges, all appointed by Democrats, are asking us to believe that the voting systems that were used last November to elect Gray Davis aren't good enough for an election to remove him from office."

-- U.S. Rep. Darrell Issa, a Republican, who helped bankroll petition drive

----------

"I think it was an outrageous election day to begin with, and I'm very pleased about the circuit court decision. ... They basically said ... elections are so fundamental, so important, to a democracy that you have to make sure that everybody's got the right to have their votes counted."

-- U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters, longtime Democratic congresswoman from Los Angeles
