(CNN) -- Just six weeks after launching Operation Iraqi Freedom, President Bush told the American people Thursday evening that major combat operations have ended. Here are some reactions from the president's speech:

Sen. John Warner (R) Virginia

"It was a moment in history, a moment richly deserved by a courageous president who made the toughest decision any president has to make -- sending men and women into harms way ... he spoke a note of humility today not taking the credit himself but giving the credit to the men and women of the armed forces and many others who brought about the success to date."

"The speech was a 10-strike. I'm one to believe the hard work is yet to come. ... "I interpret this as a major statement that the coalition, in fact, will remain until the country is safe and stable, and until a government is elected and able to survive. And that's good news, I think."

Rep. Christopher Shays (R) Connecticut

"This president had a right to rejoice. But it was just a compassionate, wonderful speech. ... We are going to find them [weapons of mass destruction], we are going to find them because they exists and it was the reason we went to Iraq."

Rep. Jane Harman (D) California

"We have to find them [weapons of mass destruction] .... Until we find them there is a security risk."

"I think the message is very clear from the president: those nations in the Middle East that support terrorism; those nations in the middle east whose governments are in pursuit of nuclear technology are targets of the United States. Not necessarily militarily but certainly economic, political and diplomatic pressure."
