Bush presses Congress to support economic plan
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush touted his economic stimulus package Saturday during his weekly radio address, urging Congress to support the plan, which includes speeding up implementation of tax cuts. "Instead of gradually reducing the marriage penalty between now and 2009, we should do it now," he said. "Instead of slowly raising the child credit to $1,000 by 2010, we should raise it now." Implementing his proposal would save the average taxpayer more than $1,000 a year, Bush said. Bush hailed the signing this week of extended benefits for the unemployed, but he said there's more to be done for the jobless. "For Americans who face the greatest difficulty finding work, I propose special re-employment accounts. These accounts will provide up to $3,000 to help pay for training, moving expenses, or other costs of finding a job." Bush also said in his address that restoring investor confidence was a crucial part of economic recovery. "Im requesting an extra $25 million for the Department of Justice to expand corporate fraud investigations," he said. "We cannot be satisfied ... until every corporate wrongdoer is held to account, and every part of our economy is strong, and everyone who wants to work can find a job."
